The Pre-Read program introduces students to Princeton's intellectual life.  Each year, the entire incoming class reads one book, chosen by President Eisgruber, before arriving on campus.  Over the course of their first year at Princeton they participate in discussions about the book and its ideas with student leaders, President Eisgruber, and others, in their colleges and elsewhere on campus.  Faculty, staff, and alumni are also encouraged to read and debate the book.

The Pre-Read selection for the class of 2024 is This America: The Case for the Nation by Jill Lepore.  The book explores the idea of the nation.  Can Americans see themselves as united by a shared commitment to genuinely inclusive ideals despite differences and disagreements that push them apart? What is the relationship between patriotism and human rights?  How might an honest reckoning with the nation's history affect its future?
